What happens when you retire? What will you do in your free time? Seriously, like all the plants and animals, we do age. We don't drink from the eternal fountain of youth. At any point of time, you have to retire from your job and make way for the future generation or you can say the young bloods.
After the retirement party, the nostalgic goodbyes and moments, you come home. With the various parting away gifts that you are carrying, you start to think about what am I going to do tomorrow. Wait a minute, tomorrow! Man! What will I be doing for rest of my life? See, this is where you get stuck when you don't plan about the things you want to do when you retire. It is not that you don't think about retirement. The work, life, enjoyment and success just makes you forget about this yet tiny but a prominent thing called retirement.
Many people really find it boring and disturbing when they have nothing to do after retiring. They sit at home, watch TV, and nap. They find these activities irritating and boring (most of the time the wives feel it). Now what should you do? It is simple. Think about any hobbies you would like to do. There could be some hobby that you wanted to do in your childhood or youth days. Sometimes you must have started a hobby and never finished it like collecting stamps, music labels, etc. You could start gardening or some other homely activities. These will be very good as you remain at home and become busy. If you want to have a hardcore adventure trip or feeling, you could go ahead for it. Go for bungee jumping, ice climbing, sailing, etc. But makes sure your insurance is valid and renewed. Besides that make a will, so that there should not be any problem after you pass away.
If you find hardcore adventure trips out of your taste, you could go for vacations.
After retiring, my uncle went with his friends to Tuscany, the artistic and cultural hub of Italy. He had a blast of a time and enjoyed very much. As soon as he came to his home, he had his wife fuming at the doorstep. My uncle tried to reason with his wife saying "Honey I left you in the house under the protection of our guardian dog Roopert and ADT Alarm System. Still you are angry. Come on honey, I cannot deprive you from your daily chores".
Poor chap for two weeks he wore black shades to cover the black spot on his left eye made by his wife. I even heard that his back problem has increased because of sleeping on the couch.
Since you are retired, you will have plenty of time to polish your golf clubs and bowling shoes. Once you're retired you don't need to spend that much time with your family. Going to the golf club or the bowling alley had been a once in a time activity during the week. But when you retire, it becomes an everyday activity. No more hearing the irritating lecture from your wife on coming home late, missing to pick up your kids from the dance practices, attending the PTA meetings and even the weekend Mass. Frankly, if you haven't planned for the things you are going to do after retirement, the right time is now. Make a list and keep it hidden in your secret drawer or cupboard. When you retire just go and refer the list and do the things before you breathe your last.
